What Are the Costs of Assisted Living?

In December 2017, the Trump administration lowered nursing home fines for the assisted living industry. These fines have been an important line of defense for seniors, helping to ensure the quality of their care.

Supporters of the measure argue that it will make care more efficient and decrease bureaucratic government control over nursing homes. Its opponents claim that the revised penalties take an already weak system of quality control and remove a crucial patient safety tool.

Perhaps you believe this change could impact you. If you or a loved one has been injured due to negligence in a nursing home, you may have a legal case. With the reduction of senior care penalties for nursing homes, legal action will become a more important way to ensure the quality of senior care for the whole community. Average Costs of Senior Care

The costs of assisted living can be considerable. If the current Administration’s change brings the outcome the drafters intend, perhaps the reduced expense for fines will result in lowered costs, overall. That remains to be seen. Regardless of any potential change, senior care is not cheap. The nationwide average monthly cost of senior care is about $3,600. These averages vary widely from state to state, ranging from as little as $2,500 in some states to as high as $6,000 in others.

The average monthly cost of assisted living here in Arizona is about $3,418 per month, so our local costs are close to the national average. That being said, the actual assisted living costs in Arizona range from as low as $1,400 to as high as $7,072 per month. Federal funds and state assistance for covering these costs are available, but neither one of them is very readily available in our state.

What to Do in Case of Poor Treatment

Quality enforcement is not going to be as strong as it has been in the past, so it is important to remain vigilant. Assisted living requires a significant investment; more importantly, it involves the health and well-being of your loved one, so it’s important to make sure he or she receives the quality care that’s expected from these facilities.

If you or a family member experiences neglect in an Arizona nursing home or other assisted living facility, the first thing to do is ensure that any injuries suffered are given treatment and dealt with properly.

It may also be necessary to speak to an experienced attorney you can trust. If you speak to an experienced lawyer, you’ll be able to determine whether or not you have a legal case, as well as how you can go about pursuing your options. Make sure your loved one is properly taken care of, and contact a trusted attorney to figure out how to move forward.
